What Does Award Winning Roses Mean?
There are various trials that breeders can enter their roses into to be assessed by independent judges. They focus on a number of features of the rose, and are conducted over several years. These awards are prestigious, and indicate that that particular rose variety is exceptional in many aspects.
Rose Of The Year Award
Rose of the Year has been around since 1982, awarded by the British Association of Rose Breeders and the British Group of the HTA to the best of the best.
Breeders are invited to submit what they consider to be the best of their up and coming varieties into the competition, which are then put through growing trials to decide the winner. Trials last for two years and are judged by both amateurs and professionals. They are conducted throughout the UK, from Aberdeen to Hampshire, and Northern Ireland to East Anglia, to further ensure all the varieties are trialed in different soil and climate conditions.
This prestigious award highlights excellent varieties of Roses, with excellent growing, disease resistance, and, of course, beautiful flowers. Only one variety is awarded this title per year.
Gold Standard Award
The Gold Standard Award has been awarded to worthy varieties since 2006. Established by the British Association of Rose Breeders (BARB), it has been independently managed by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (2004 – 2014) and the Royal National Rose Society (2015 onwards).
The trials last for two years and information is gathered from various independent judges throughout the time. Health, flowering, scent and commercial appeal are all considered key factors for judging.
