Cut flowers arranged with care in a vase are a wonderful addition to any room. Not only that but studies have shown they reduce anxiety and boost moods too. Here’s our take on how to make the best of them.
- Proportion is key – A good rule of thumb is for the height of the vase to be approximately one-third to one-half the height of the entire arrangement (flowers/branches included).
- Think beyond flowers – Vases can be filled with a variety of items to add texture and personality. Natural Elements like branches, pampas grass, pebbles, sand, or seashells for an organic look or seasonal items, like pinecones and ornaments in winter, or dried orange slices and moss in spring.
- Don’t overfill the vase, sometimes less is more. A few carefully chosen stems or branches can have more impact than a packed arrangement. Allow the shape of the vase and the space around it to shine.
- Group in odd numbers – When grouping multiple vases together, arrange them in trios or quintets of varying heights and shapes for a dynamic and visually interesting display.
- Use rice, pebbles, or marbles at the bottom of the vase to add weight and stability, to anchor top-heavy stems or branches.

This could be due to several factors. Firstly keep out of direct sunlight as this will speed up wilting. Secondly keep topping up the water and replace completely every couple of days. And finally add a dash of liquid or powdered plant food to keep your roses in tip top condition. Follow these steps and your roses’ longevity should improve dramatically.

The best time to cut flowers for vases is late evening or early morning when they are well-hydrated and not stressed by heat. Avoid cutting during the warmest part of the day.
