September - November
After a hot, long summer, sadly the rose growing season is coming to an end. Roses will naturally finish flowering and lose their leaves throughout the autumn. This will happen at different rates for different varieties. To support the health of your rose and encourage growth for the next season, many roses will have been pruned back and have had some or all of their leaves removed. If your rose arrives with no leaves, buds or blooms, please do not worry. Our expert rose care team have already prepared your rose for winter, ensuring a healthy start for 2027.

Planted Portland Roses
The Duchess of Portland developed Portland Roses in the early 1800s. These vigorous, hardy roses produce beautiful, fragrant blooms throughout summer. Their classic, old-fashioned flowers have a distinctive feature known as blooming ‘on the shoulder’. With very little stem between the flower and the first leaves, the blooms appear to rest directly on the foliage.
For more information on the different types of roses we offer and therefore what may be most suitable for your garden, see our handy guide.
How will my gift planted scented birthday rose gift arrive?
Our roses are cut back for the Winter to promote root growth, thus will arrive with short but healthy stems between October and March. Roses in April and May would be expected to have new growth and leaves, and then between May and September buds and blooms. *Please note: These are estimates and can vary due to weather conditions and exact variety of rose.
Expertly planted in our exclusive large willow basket, your rose will be ready to bring instant life to any outdoor space! Your rose will be safely nestled among approx 14L of quality fresh compost and premium slow release fertiliser, thus giving it all the nutrients that make our roses so stunning. Finished with a bark topping to aid water retention and suppress weeds, it also gives a gift-ready finish. At approx 14L, this large basket can therefore provide all your rose needs for up to 2 years with no replanting necessary, thus making it the perfect hassle-free birthday gift!
We take care to be as sustainable as possible here at English Roses, and so therefore avoid single use plastics.
