History and Development #
W. Kordes’ Sons have been cultivating roses in the state of Schleswig-Holstein for over a century. Breeding of what would come to be known as Champagne Moment Rose in the UK began in 1999 led by Thomas Proll.
In 2002 it was awarded ADR status – a rigorous German trial conducted over several years focussing on disease resistance, hardiness, habit and attractiveness.
In 2006 it was named Rose of the Year, and also awarded a Gold Standard award; both taking place over several years of thorough trials. The Royal Horticultural Society also awarded Champagne Moment an Award of Garden Merit in 2012 – a testament to both its health and beauty.
Champagne Moment remains a bestseller popular with gardeners for its versatility, looks and disease resistance.

Requirements and Maintenance #
Soil #
In keeping with its versatile nature it flourishes in most soils and is tolerant of acid, neutral or alkaline soils. Apply mulch and fertiliser in late winter or early spring. Apply fertiliser again in early summer. Read our planting guide here.

Diseases and Pests #
Good disease resistance. Be vigilant for the most common diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot. Signs of insects such as aphids and mites should also be monitored.
Treat mildew by pruning affected leaves.
Treat aphids by growing plants that attract insects that prey on aphids. See companion plants below.
Treat blackspot by pruning affected leaves, destroying fallen leaves.

Companion Planting #
The first step is to choose plants that share similar requirements in terms of soil, fertilizer, water and sun exposure. Be mindful of prolific plants that may compete with your roses.
You may wish to avoid plants that attract aphids such as cosmos, nasturtiums and sunflowers although they can also act as a lure to draw pests away from your roses.
Consider plants that attract insects that feed on aphids. Lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies are predatory insects that eat pests. The Seedball Beetle mix is perfect for attracting ladybirds to your roses.
Plants such as alliums, lavender and geraniums possess strong scents that repel pests. Lavender in particular will compliment Champagne Moment aesthetically and will enjoy a full sun position.
Planting the likes of catmint and marigolds you encourage a natural ecosystem beneficial to your roses. Catmint is also a good pollinator and provides attractive ground cover. A lower growing marigold such as French or Signet performs a similar task and delivers a colourful carpet around your roses.
Consider plants that will offer colour into the autumn such as salvias and viburnum.
Complementary Colours #
Champagne Moment roses will look exceptional when contrasted with cool blues, violet and blue violet. There are, however, no rules and choosing a dramatic clash of colours can also work.

Champagne Moment is one of the most versatile roses we have here at English Roses, and looks stunning alongside most other varieties. Large and bushy, with an abundance of blooms through the summer, it can create a focal point in a container or looks beautiful in beds and borders.
Its soft, creamy blooms enhance almost any colour scheme, but also look stunning in their own right planted en-masse. Rich pinks and oranges will blend harmoniously, while cooler toned purples and violets would create more of a statement.
