Are you experiencing more fading roses than usual? Are some roses looking a slightly different colour this year? Here are 5 reasons why.
1. Blooms Naturally Fade When They Age #
Many rose varieties fade as they age. This is a natural part of their lifecycle and can create a beautiful bush of gradient blooms!
2. The Weather #
When there has been extremely hot and bright weather, roses can experience ‘sun bleaching’. This is due to the high UV light rays which cause the pigments to break down quicker.
3. Colour Roses #
Some colours can be affected more than others. Deep colours can be more noticeable such as red roses turning pink. Most modern red roses can often be seen fading to pink due to their pigment undertones. Light coloured roses such as yellow often bleach to white.
4. Rose Variety #
Some varieties are bred to produce multiple colours in one flush, creating a stunning display of colour!
5. Stressed Roses #
Stressed roses can change the shape and look of new blooms. For example, stress from hot and dry weather means they have limited energy to produce ‘perfect’ new blooms. As soon as the stress is resolved, they will go back to producing the usual flowers.
Should I Be Concerned? #
Fading blooms are all part of the natural life cycle of a rose and is to be expected. If the rose is fading from age or weather, this is unavoidable and nothing to be concerned about. It is simply reacting to the external conditions. Roses are living plants and it can be fascinating to see the surprising variations. Every bloom is unique and no two roses are the same!
What Can I Do? #
If the blooms are aging, simply deadhead them. This will encourage the plant to produce a fresh new flush of blooms in the original colour.
If the rose is fading due to dry and extreme heat, then this is unfortunately unavoidable and part of nature. However, rest assured this will not affect the rose itself. As soon as the stressful conditions have eased, it will continue to flower as expected.
