Tips on How To Train A Climbing Rose. #
Tip 1. #
You can plant anytime of the year, however, a good time to plant your climbing rose is during autumn/winter when the rose is in its dormant phase so it can concentrate its energy to the root system. It is best to start with a young rose with supple flexible stems
Tip 2. #
Climbing roses will need a strong support structure to grow properly, For those without a fence, wall, shed, or stable structure, you can install a trellis or arbor to train your climbing rose on.
Tip 3. #
We would suggest that while training young climbing roses, bend the main canes in the direction you want them to grow and gently tie them to your support system, This encourages lateral growth and more blooms along the length of the cane, use a soft tie to avoid damaging the plant.
Tip 4. #
You should keep your roses well watered throughout the year, especially in the hotter months, make sure there is adequate drainage so as to not water-log the rose, check our watering guide here. You could consider installing a irrigation system for continued and efficient watering.
Tip 5. #
The base of your climbing rose should be kept mulched to keep it moist and to help suppress weeds. Apply the mulch annually in spring after applying a granular rose feed and watering the ground thoroughly. Use well-rotted garden compost, manure, or composted bark.
Tip 6. #
We think that Pruning is essential when training climbing roses. Pruning helps to circulate air, prevent disease and promote new growth. We would advise to cut back the smaller side shoots (laterals) to 2-4 buds from the main frame. You will also need to check your ties once a year or so to make sure they do not get tight and cut into the stems
Tip 7. #
You should check your climbing rose regularly for disease and insects, if any issues arise it is best to treat it promptly to stop the spread to other plants nearby. Either remove all damaged parts or we would recommend our SB invigorator Spray to keep your roses free from pests and mildew.
Tip 8. #
Please remember with climbing roses it is worth the wait, you will need patience to see your dreams come alive! It is said that it takes only three years for the rose to bloom fully; first they sleep, then they creep, then they leap! Soon you will have a beautiful masterpiece that you have created for years to come, Sitting under an arbour, teeming with flowers all around, is an unrivalled joy. To sit peacefully and connect with nature, and to take a moment to delight at the roses in full bloom. Experience the bees buzzing busily in the flowers, and be proud in the knowledge that this hub of wildlife thrives in your garden.
